In her comment to my last post Lorna perceptively interprets what I said as: ”If your comment adds nothing to the silence, keep it to yourself.” A Buddhist saying. I think it most poetic.
Unfortunately, whilst I DO know WHEN to shut up I find it virtually impossible to do so. During my recent quest to get rid of stuff now irrelevant to my life I came across some old school reports. Oh did I laugh. It’s uncanny. What’s bred in the bone does not only come out, it’ll stay there for decades. As young as age seven the summoning up: “Ursula has to learn not to talk so much during lesson time.” Another: “Ursula needs to tame her lust for words.” Isn’t that sweet? Few things amuse me more than myself.
What a comfort to learn that a leopard doesn’t change its spots. And some people are chameleons – always blending into their background, no doubt with good reason.
U
The chameleon? Interesting creatures about which I was forced to learn a few monthes back having made a complete idiot of myself in a discusion.
Did you know that they are zygodactylous? (Hope I speleld that correctly) Ialways thought that they changed colour for camouflage. Not always so>
The main purpose of colour change in chameleons is social signaling, with camouflage secondary. Colour change signals a chameleon’s physiological state and intentions to other chameleons. Chameleons tend to show darker colours when angered, or attempting intimidate others, while males show lighter, multi-coloured patterns when courting . Apparently there is one species that uses colour change for camouflage according to the visual system of the prey species….clever!
As for school reports:” David would do better if he put his mind to his work rather than entertaining his fellow pupils.” Having studied my own pupils and understood a great deal about those who spent their time either misbehaving or “entertaining their fellow pupils” I came to understand a lot about myself as a child…………

This is too funny. I also had issues with talking too much in school. It was always the one bad comment on my report card and I remember it well. Oh well…it could have been worse for both of us.

“Tame her lust for words”… That is about brilliant. I mostly was told to “Shut up already!”

That’s funny. Comments my teachers made were more along the lines of: “I wish Lorna would participate more in class. She’s quite smart and knows the answers but is too shy to share them aloud.” I may not have changed my spots, but some of them may have faded…

Yes I can just imagine how naughty you were, well
maybe not at school but more than likely at home,
naughty with a capital ‘N’ but hey guess what? I like
you just as you are, and how about calling in for some
tea and pancakes, my treat…
