Balancing act

Have decided to change the tune.  Stand by for white noise.

Before you panic and implore me to stay my old self: It takes approximately six weeks to change a habit and/or acquire a new taste. So there is time yet.

The question being, as yet unanswered, and no one but no one – not even the professionals – appreciate this: What do you do during those six weeks?

Answers on a postcard or write me a long letter. Or leave me alone. Godforsaken.

  1. Must be akin to a gestation period – very much like being pregnant I suppose. You become cranky, uncomfortable, and eventually go into labor, and deliver the change, which you then immediately embrace and adore with all your heart. OK, it’s a theory anyway…

    • I know I can be trying, Phil. Any you are only trying to help. So thank you for your kind offering of a theory.

For the record: I was NOT cranky or uncomfortable when pregnant. Never have I admired the lucious outline of my body more, never did I feel better than whilst ripening like an Italian peach. To bursting point. Which, incidentally, coincided with that cover of the highly pregnant Demi Moore (Vanity Fair, August 1991). You may remember it. I thought it quite wonderful.

  2. Am praying this urge to change will pass. Perhaps it is due to indigestion or hormonal imbalance. Take two alka-seltzer and come back as the Ursula we love. ‘Pollyanna on the Blog’ just doesn’t have the same ring to it.

    • Thank you, Renee. So very kind. Forget Alka Seltzer. And, lucky me, I don’t do ‘hormonal imbalance’. I am that miracle of the “exception to the rule”.

However, and let’s keep this between you and me since most embarrassing: I have already forgotten which habit I wanted to break or be broken into. Taking a short cut as it were.

  3. I think during the six weeks, you’re supposed to practice breaking the old habit and instilling the new one. Then, by the end of the 6th week, the new habit is in place. I hear figuring out how to get those habits just right takes some finessing–ask any nun. ;)

    • Yes, Lorna, sigh: The turning point. Which reminds me, not least because your name starts with an L, of Lot’s wife. She turned and then what happened to her? Shows you: Can’t be too careful.

Inspired by your comment I am considering applying to become bespoke habit maker at a cloister near me. Do send thread, please; I might need it.

      • Okay, but I’m not sending you any needles. I worry about you, you know…

  6. This six-week adjustment period – is this a fully-researched fact or is it hearsay? It certainly makes sense though, when I think how long it takes me to change an entrenched habit.
