Man born of woman

I am not speechless, I am gobsmacked:

Quote Ramana, over at Conrad’s in response to C’s “Memorial Day”: “I counsel many youngsters to join the armed forces as a glorious career. Some listen, most don’t. I shall not stop counselling so.” Glorious? GLORIOUS? GLORIOUS? Are you crazy? You are no better than those whose actions you habitually bemoan. And, Ramana, let me tell you one thing: Mothers do not give birth to canon fodder.

I sometimes reflect what makes or breaks a relationship (however distant). A chance remark is sometimes all it takes.

  1. Please don’t distance a relationship because of a chance remark.

    • Gail, as you know I am one of the most stupidly forgiving kind: Whilst highly critical of others and even more so of myself I don’t bear grudges – not only because I don’t remember arguments for longer than five minutes but because I don’t give a shit about people flinging cow pats around.

BUT – and it’s a big BUTT in this case – some things are matters of PRINCIPLE. Let men go to war, kill each other, retaliate as Ramana appears to approve of. Fine, great, absolutely fucking marvellous. Why not if they have nothing better to do with their lives: Go ahead, let yourselves be wasted on some spurious cause. We all need something to occupy us. However, let NO one but NO one expect ME to condone for one second sending young men (indeed any man) to be killed in the name of misguided nationalism/patriotism/religious believes. And that is where Ramana’s and my ways part. I do not wish to associate and be associated with people who promote that which I believe to be “fundamentally” wrong.

True self defence is a different matter. If someone broke into my home and threatened my offspring or myself I’d have no compunction to wield a chair, a knife or to employ a kick in the groin. But that’s close up and personal – not some bloody vendetta in the vain (and I use this adjective advisedly) attempt to settle conflict, a lot of which is none of our business anyway.

      • OH MY GOD, I TOTALLY AGREE with everything you say here. And I’m not doing a KA (Kiss-ass).

  4. How about if this is placed in contrast with the notion of pursuing a glorious career as a deadbeat?

    • Looney, I looked up the meaning of “deadbeat” – just to make sure.

Give me deadbeats any day. At least they won’t have the energy to pull a trigger, plant a landmine, drive a tank or send monkeys to the moon.
