Am in shock.

Son came home briefly for pit stop before heading out again. He briefly mentioned argument he had last night with Lawrence (do people still christen their children Lawrence/Laurence? Whatever).

I don’t know what Laurentio is on but it should be withdrawn from the market this minute. Hence the argument. Lawrence tried to sell to my son that the only way forward is to PROCREATE. Think about this, Ashok, before you do. Thus, apparently, you leave your mark to posterity. Bull. Bull. And more bull. Luckily son is not stupid. Hence the argument with Lawrence.

Is this what the world has come to? You shoot sperm in some as yet to be specified direction and become a FATHER to make your mark? Go and chisel. Son being son of his mother would have none of it. And Lawrence better not show up here any time soon – till I have forgotten all about it. Told son to tell Lawrence, not of Arabia, to pen a poem, write a piece of music, or if need be a novel if he wants to leave a mark. Bloody hell. Lawrence is 19 years old.  Wiping my brow.

  1. Ah! But the longest surviving genetic mark comes from the female ancestors. Certainly the most easily traced anyway!

  2. Yes,I know, Daphne. That’s hardly the point is it?

All I know is that I despair – when I have a spare minute.

  3. Daphne, you have no idea how glad I am to have someone called Daphne in my life.

Tried to watch Out of Africa a minute ago, since totally enamoured with Klaus-Maria Brandauer. Was shocked – as seems to be my default mode at the moment – what I found over your place. Katherine Hepburn being the front runner. Well, I never. Some of your readers might like to reconsider. Imagine yourself in a nun’s outfit on the Nile in company of Humphrey Bogart – with two crocodiles watching. Exactly. Didn’t think so.

As to Helen Mirren: She might fit the Queen and Margaret Thatcher but does GM fit Helen Mirren? You don’t have to answer this – only rhetorical question – since I do not wish to come between friends.

  4. Lawrence’s attitude is what causes overpopulation. I thought the Pope caused overpopulation, but now there’s India & China.

The United States was the No 1 in technology & everything else—I’m an American. But because of population, India has more exceptionally, extra smart kids than the U. S. has kids. Probably the same in China with all the Tiger Moms.

    • Son’s friend Lawrence needs to keep his trousers zipped up. Now there ia contraception no one has ever thought of: Stuck zips. Don’t laugh but apparently he [that’s Lawrence] will NOT procreate with any old coming his way. Discerning, don’t you agree? I truly hope he won’t grace our threshold in a hurry. As you know my memory is bad at fading.

This being the internet, and myself paranoid, I can’t say too much about China. All I remember was being told about “Die Rote Gefahr”; China (red and a threat) taking over the rest of the world. So far so fair.

As to Tiger Mums. Not my style. Son had everything on a silver plate. Everything. He chose virtually nothing off that platter. Not to save me money. Because he is his mother’s son. And does things his own way. Smart? He is smart. Remarkably so. Frighteningly so. Took me decades to arrive where he is at already. You know that line “Things I wish my mother had told me”? Truth is my mother didn’t tell me anything.

  5. Wasn’t it Napoleon, some time during his Russian adventure, that was asked why he did not Proceed to China? His reported reply was, “Let China sleep. For when China wakes the world will tremble.” (Google says he said this: Que la Chine le sommeil. Pour quand la Chine se réveille le monde tremblera.)

    • Magpie, you do disappoint when you choose to. YOU are Daphne. Jack Lemmon aka Geraldine aka Daphne. Not the saxophone, the bass.

Some like it hot, some prefer tepid.
