Blown away

I do not wish to shame the person whose utter rot has just come to my attention in some comment box.  So I will not name him though at least one of you who will recognize who I am talking about. And no, this is not my being cryptic once more, this is a totally selfish exercise in letting off steam without harming an innocent. Anyway, he is a lot older than me and whilst I do not automatically give Carte Blanche to people on grounds of their age (other than when they are under 20 in which case I’ll excuse anything)  I do try and show respect for my “elders”. Pull the other one. Respect? What respect? Earn it. I will help you across the road or shake up your pillow but if you still engage in intellectual debate I am afraid you will have to live with the consequences.

Yes, so here goes, the context almost doesn’t matter:  “…the world of tomorrow needs all women and men to be reasonably educated and well informed…they will then be able to influence the masses…” Savour this. Read it again.

I don’t know whether to laugh or to cry: “...ALL women and men to be … educated” …” They will then be able to influence the MASSES ?????????????????????????????? Come again?

On the whole I try to avoid discussions on politics and religion. Firstly I don’t know enough about either; and both tend to take up an awful lot of time with little return considering my life expectancy. Neither do I want to have my head bashed in, my family shot, in case my neighbour takes offence should I not see eye to eye with him.

However, I will make an exception here. It is outrageous.Think about it:  “ALL men and women educated” which presumably includes the writer and one or two of his audience,  “to influence the masses”. The masses: What, the great unwashed? “Influence” them: Influence “them” to what purpose exactly, may I ask. Yours? That of ALL the “educated”? Whose purpose is WHAT? Exactly? Why not EDUCATE the MASSES? HUH?

I am incandescent.

  1. I think I see your point.

If all men and women are “reasonably” educated, who does that leave, other than those in the process of being educated?

What does “reasonably” entail? Is it a level of education or an education in the correct social agendas, whatever those may be?

    • Mike, thanks for taking the time. One of my faults that I shoot from the hip instead of calibrating my thoughts first before either pressing “send” or “publish”.

If only I had taken the time I’d have made my objection more clear: If the author calls for “ALL men and women” to be educated to THEN “educate” the MASSES who the fuck are the “masses”? A species as yet to be anthro-apologised?

I so wish you (and Magpie) hadn’t taken up, most reasonably, the point of the author’s “reasonably” educated. If we go to where insult can’t do further injury I’ll go up in steam.

      • You’re welcome.

        Your point was clear.

While I had read the original post the comment came from when it was posted, I hadn’t seen the comment thread as I didn’t comment. Now I have seen the comment thread and understand “incandescent!”

  2. The tides are high again, I see. Whenst doth the calm find you? Passion overrides and flings a splinter that you should flick off quite easily being the sensible woman you are. But I musn’t elaborate good cheer for the New Year in your wake, lest I get caught in the eye of the storm.

    • Passion, turmoil is what keeps one alive. Says one of the calmest people ever – when in a maelstroem. Give me a storm in a teacup and I am your hurricane.

Easily outraged at human folly calm will not find me till die, Totsy. Even then I will not lie still. I so wish I could “fling a splinter easily”. I can’t, Totsy, I can’t. Don’t fool me: You have been caught in the eye of some storms in your own life.

      • Oui, oui, says one who now avoids even the wind. I sit perched as a beautiful bird ready to take flight. I’m much too delicate to brushed into the eye, as age lends me specks of wisdom and grace.

  3. Reasonably……. now there is an adverb to conjure with…

In a fair and sensible way.
By fair or sensible standards of judgment; rightly or justifiably.

Think about it. Who judges what is reasonable?

    to a moderately sufficient extent or degree;

    Oh dear!

I’m feeling incandescent…maybe not the same incandescence but incandescent all the same.

  4. The Pope’s masses – holy mass??? If everyone is educated it is the only ‘mass’ I can imagine, unless of course they are referring to the alien invasion that may happen unless the world ends in 2012 according to the Mayans. But again, if we’re all educated….

    • Renee, I like your take. Very much so. I can only assume that the reason I hadn’t thought of it myself that I don’t go to mass. Neither do I envy Benedict’s job. What is it popes actually get out of it? Other than an amazing wardrobe?

  5. Obviously the comment is with respect to Newtonian Masses. Influence refers to levitation and other forms of action at a distance. Thus, “to influence the masses” is to be like Harry Potter and we all need to be educated at Hogwarts in order to accomplish this.

    • Looney, I can always rely on you to to throw a scientific spanner into my works. Please don’t tell anyone since I really can do without being entered into the Guiness Book of Records: This household is so Harry Potter FREE I worry at times.

Will probably grow a hog’s wart as punishment for my omission.

  6. Leave it to you to shed light on such a topic, although I am not sure incandescent lights have much of a future though…

It would seem to me that the best way to influence the masses is to keep them ignorant and simply happy enough to be spoon-fed whatever thoughts and ideas those wishing to influence desire. It seems to have worked well for centuries. Education of the masses leads to the chaos that we call progress. Yes, those pesky educated folks, always questioning and challenging everything. Sheesh!

    Comment by Phil — January 6, 2012 @ 14:24 | Reply

    • Phil, the first time masses were brought to my attention was when I was reliably told that just because millions of flies eat shite doesn’t make same palatable.

  7. I see that you are enjoying the moment again…
Actually I am still waiting for you to call into my
Space for another look around… Perhaps you
might even like it (There was going to be a big
whopping smiley there but I left it blank just for
you… Well just imagine it okay? The smiley… )

Have a wicked and exciting day BOTB

    • Standing to attention. Damage limitation on its way. And thank you so much, insert smiley standing on its head, upside down, to draw my attention (you are the first) to that I can be shortened to BOTB. Doesn’t sound so good, does it? Sugar. Maybe I should reinvent myself. If anything comes to mind do let me know. Meanwhile I’ll stir the broth.

      • Actually I like you just as you are,
and yes BOTB is definitely not you
and so how about I use your first
        choice of Bitch-On-The-Blog as it
does have a wicked ring to it…

        Have a delightfully wicked evening
        and rememeber, the Ghouls are
waiting for your next visit, as am I
        of course…

I must get out of the habit of zapping
a smiley at the end of every line, see
I was tempted yet again but managed
        a whole comment without one…
