Thanking a seller, advertising a surplus to his requirements “dictionery”, for making me smile.

  1. 🙂 (I’m practicing being terse like you. How am I doing?)

    • You are doing fine, Lorna. However, one size doesn’t fit all. Where I am a size zero I think being ‘windy’ – as you call it – suits you so very well. Your aim to entertain your readers where I just want to nudge. Talking of windy – and I can’t leave this thought in your own comment box, so I am sneaking it in here:

I have just read entries so far to the Seven Deadly Sins competition. Naturally, all of you compliment each other. I am no fan of fawning; still, I do understand that you can’t poke holes into the fabric of your competitors’ prose. However, as any editor or critic knows that doesn’t do a writer any favours. It’s next to useless to not get proper feedback. Fact is that some of those entries make my eyes glaze over. There is one which added some hilarity to the reading by her extravagant use of cliches. Adds nothing, takes away a lot. I don’t need a midwife to paint a picture in my mind. Nancy’s I like. Not least because of the punchline.

That you write extremely well we know, so I won’t repeat it. What makes your ‘gluttony’ stand out is that you transcend the subject. Go beyond the obvious. Must be the Buddhist in you.

Competitions, or maybe – more charitably – one should call them ‘challenges’, appear to abound in the world of writing. I’d make the judge from hell, red ink poised: Highly critical, impartial and, a quality never to be underestimated, I am not afraid to voice what I think. But then: Do I really wish to be the wolf to someone’s sheep?

PS Quick afterthought: By publishing entries as they come in (Katy’s blog) doesn’t that give an unfair advantage to latecomers as they can gauge “the competition”?
