As metaphors go this is good.

When Maupassant’s friends asked him why he ate dinner, every day, half way up the Eiffel Tower, he said: “Because it’s the only place in Paris where you can’t see the Eiffel Tower.”

Don’t dismiss it. Think about it. Let if fester.

  1. Let’s see …. the top floor is at 276.13 meters, which places “half way up” at 138.065 meters. The second level, however, is at 115.73 meters. This is going to be an interesting meal.

  2. I have a more simple solution, eat inside with the shutters/curtains closed, your back to any view of said monument. Why do some people just have to be so melodramatic attention-seekers? Hmmm. I should be able to answer that question for myself, having quite a bit of experience with attention-seeking and melodrama… But I’d never scale a structure just so I didn’t have to see it. Way too much work. 😉

    • Maupassant, being French, will have eaten all over the place (Paris, that is). However, to make a point (as he did) we often need to exaggerate. It’s what comedy/satire/sarcasm depends on.

Leaving aside the Eiffel Tower’s architecture clearly assaulting his sense of the aesthetic: If you want to ride out a storm sit in the eye of it. Don’t watch it from the outside.

If, with the above, I have just got my knickers in a twist – so be it. I am sure I’ll find a way out.

      • Ah, I see. Since I’m not a storm chaser (I’m a storm runner), I didn’t see the logic. Now I do. Is it really that peaceful in the eye of a storm? And how does one stay there? I guess one doesn’t, does one? Again, I find myself behind the curtains…

        • Lorna, I have no idea how you “stay” in the eye of the storm. At best you just find yourself there.

Do you remember, physic lesson number I don’t know: Centrifugal Force?

          Looking from the outside in,
