God damn it, it had to happen. Not that I am against quoting people per se. I quote myself all the time. At least it’s the original. However, will make an exception today (Ramana, do rejoice if you have the energy): “Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves.” I like Carl Jung. A lot. Though tend to think him over polite. I’d say “What irritates us about others is a bloody good indicator … ” Of what? Not sure. Depends. The theory being that that which irritates us in others is what we recognize in ourselves. Maybe. I myself veer more to notion that that what irritates me irritates me precisely because I don’t recognize myself.

Main thing is: I am not easily irritated. Which is why I keep three pieces of beautiful, and beautifully polished, driftwood. To bite on – outside childbirth, toothache, cracked ribs – in ill judged attempt to stifle screams. Yes, come to think of it: Those three beauties were a well judged investment. Like all good investments: Cheap on the outset. Yielding high. If any of you would like to employ me as a fund manager hedging your bets please do. You can’t lose what you haven’t got.

  1. And here I thought you would be in a most stellar mood, with Summer Solstice in full display. I suppose biting on a piece of driftwood is far better than biting your tongue when irritated. In addition to suppressing a scream or two, it has the added benefit of forcing a smile as well, though some people may not find it quite as inviting to smile back.

Interesting tags on this little piece of writing. Seems like you’ll have to groan and bear it, or is it grin and bear it? I forget which.

    • Dear sweet Phil, you’ve got it all wrong: Am in stellar mood, groaning and boring everyone. Summer solstice having me in state of alarm. What with sky being overcast who knows what sort of moon will be seen tonight. You can tell, can’t you: I do NOT trust Lady Luck. She is fickle. Send me Lord Luck and I’ll drop my white and starched lacy handkerchief in an instant.

Am so gratified, particularly as I cherish the observant, that, as usual, you notice my delicately chiselled tags.Tags being like punctuation. Making points. Sometimes an exclamation mark. A silent cri de coeur.

  2. I have a teeth gard because I grind at night my dentist tells me. If I don’t go to sleep I shove it under my pillow & promise I won’t need it. I don’t have driftwood so I could wear it daytime for practice.

    • You do make me laugh, Cynthia (take it you survived visit of your various offspring).

Yes, teeth guard. It’s as unappealing as it gets. Some years ago my dentist suggested that contraption to me (apparently I grind my teeth during my sleep – as if nightmares reliving daytime isn’t punishment enough). “Fine”, I said to him, “and forget it. If I grind my teeth I grind my teeth. Let them wear thin. That’ll show them who is boss.” And yes, I am a soft touch. As long as I can get my gnashers into an apple.

  3. I have plenty of energy Ursula. I have just returned from a week end male bonding with the same friend who featured in my story. My battery is now fully charged. I have responded to comments on my post on the first kiss and have posted the sequel.

I love to quote others which i suspect is why you mentioned me here. “Between friends differences in taste or opinion are irritating in direct proportion to their triviality.”
