Damage limitation

A woman I admire though find increasingly irritating comes up with this: “Your reputation is priceless. Don’t damage it.”

Sure. Couldn’t agree more. But what if OTHERS damage your reputation? Can you take needle and thread to it yourself? Or pay the going rate in the next repair shop? Or just live with the fallout?

Life is not a one way street. And sometimes a lorry takes the wrong turn. So always look both ways.

  1. Ursula, this does not sound like you to me.

This is more like Cassio in Othello saying “Reputation, reputation, reputation! Oh, I have lost my reputation! I have lost the immortal part of myself, and what remains is bestial.”

You are not Cassio. And your friend sounds like Iago. Iago gets Casio drunk!

And more importantly, Casio was just the second in command. To the best of my understanding, you are IN command!

Thank you, Ramana. I shall take this not so much as a compliment as an encouragement. Not least in the wake of your Sandra Kring quote this morning. You sure did hit the spot there.

“Iago gets Cassio drunk”. Yes, I once got my then best friend drunk. Not by design, just accident. She couldn’t hold her drink. And elicited from her all I knew already. We were 21 and 18 respectively. It didn’t damage our friendship. I was ok with it despite the fact that I hate been lied to. Being lied to the one thing that will make me spin. Some years later she wrote me a letter saying that my one downfall will be that I always always always need to get to the bottom of everything. Even at risk of hurting myself. Unnecessarily. And only when right at the bottom will I start clawing my way out.

I dare say she was right. Why not make life difficult when it could be easy? Yes, steel. Some people will self destruct, and I tend to go the way of most resistance.

Or as my father used to say to me: Do you really have to reinvent the wheel, Ursula?
