Bitch on the Blog

On your own

One wonders as one does – in between smelling the roses and cheese.

This minute, and not for the first time, I wonder how human kind evolved, indeed survived, for thousands of years, without the help of self help books. Are we little children, paw in Mama’s hand, crossing the road? Apparently so.

One of these days I’ll doctor a self help manual for those who write self help manuals.

May we all drown.

  1. Wrong Shui! (or whatever it’s called) I was given Eyore’s little book of something or other… that was quite amusing.

    • I like Eeyore. What’s good about him is not only his outlook on life but his visage to carry it off. Whereas when I am down in the mouth no one takes my woes seriously. One day someone/thing will wipe the smile off my face to make me more credible.

Yes. Wrong Shui. Just given two (why did I have two?) of those little books of wisdom away. Next time you paint your front door, Magpie, try and make it red – and reposition the house. I once lived in a beauty of a house which faced all the wrong way. No wonder I lost it.

      • I have to say that I did spend time giggling over Wrong Shui…..

  2. Mankind has always had thouhelp books like thous shall and thou shall nots.

    • You are right, Ramana. Indeed one could say that philosophy’s purpose is to ‘help’ us. Shine a light.

However, I do dislike the self appointed house and time management custodian. It’s one thing to show someone how to iron a shirt after you have ironed thousands yourself. It’s another to tell someone in ‘baby steps’ how to stack your bookshelf. One shelf at a time. Purleese!

  3. It’s a contradiction in terms, isn’t it, a self-help manual? If you were really practising self-help you wouldn’t need a manual written by someone else.

    • I am a sucker for all sorts, Nick. I even bought all three of what’s her name how to tidy and colour code your socks nonsense. Reading her is soothing in the way cookery books are soothing when both your kitchen cupboard and fridge are empty. And likely to remain so.

There is only one approach to tackle life, and that’s the Angel’s: Just do it. How difficult can it be? Exactly. Mind you, and I don’t know what’s come over me: At the moment I find theory not that easy to put into practice. There you go: A new self help book being born. “How to get on in life despite yourself”.
