Do you know the way how people in your life make you groan (I nearly wrote grown – that’s English for you; you mean one thing, you spell it like the other – no wonder the nation is going to the dogs. Make mine a cat. Stirred not shaken.)

Yes, other people making me groan (inwardly). If I had to dissect anyone close and of remote interest to me  I could list and describe a rainbow of  their usual gripes, woes and happiness. And how they express them. A bit like a fingerprint of their soul (or should that be sole? Leather or fish?).

It’s endearing. Familiarity most certainly  – in my eyes – does not breed contempt. Familiarity envelopes you like a favourite blanket,  whether cashmere or sackcloth.

I make MYSELF groan in joyful recognition of yet another of  MY recognizable footprints in either the written or the spoken word. Hell’s Bells. The hunchback of Notre Dame has nothing on me.

As long as I don’t go deaf on myself I am yours, predictably, reliably, the odd crack and cold water notwithstanding,

U

    • Thank you for your kind endorsement, Ramana. Let’s hope I’ll never turn pink in the wash.

      • Let’s rephrase that:: I am certain I’ll never turn pink in the wash. Dyed in the wool more like it.

  2. I’m glad I don’t recall every last gripe and woe of my friends and blogmates. The ones I do remember are enough to be going on with. Not to mention my own of course. Anyway, what really interests me is their particular take on the gripe or woe in question. Some people laugh off their gripes as transient irritations, some bring them up over and over again as if their entire identity is under threat. Intriguing.

    • You are right, Nick: Intriguing. However, my point was how people will leave a recognizable footprint in the sand of life.

As so often, and I hope you won’t take this the wrong way, you put a negative spin: “… identity under threat”. Not at all. We are who we are. To me – amusingly so. Those people I engage with I am fond of. Even the ones I find mildly irritating. And there is such reassurance to “recognize” someone. A bit like picking up the phone and you know by the caller’s voice who they are before they have barely said ‘Hello’.

Many many moons ago I said I could pick you, Nick, out in a crowd. Not by the button hole we agreed you’d wear but by your manner, your demeanour. By instinct. You weren’t best pleased. Now – if this comment of mine had been a post I might have called it “SURPRISE” – in an ironic way. And filed it under ‘Pretentious’ – a category sadly lacking in input at the moment.

  3. Ursula, it’s sometimes hard to know exactly what your main point is when you’re making a number of points at once! And I would say the negative spin comes from the persistent moaning rather than my mention of it….

    • Thanks for the compliment: “… making a number of points at once.” I am known for being generous.

Other than that your answer has lost me. You, Nick, put a “negative spin” on virtually everything (see your blog). And rarely pick up on when someone (in my case myself) sends themselves up. Which is fine. That’s your signature mark. There is someone else in the vicinity who gets prickly over so little one needs a magnifying glass to identify the culprit.

      Don’t fret.
