Count me out

Some of my reading is frustrating. Why? Because it states the obvious.

So, for instance I learnt, and don’t shoot the messenger because the message is blindingly clear: We have twenty four hours a day. Well, obviously and because I am extra special, I do have twenty FIVE hours –  but that’s delusion for you. For all I know I am dead already and will live till eternity eats itself inside out.

Yes, so twenty four hours a day are the great equalizer. Rich man, poor woman. Squander at your leisure, work yourself into a lather. Doesn’t matter. Twenty four hours every day. Regardless. By way of non sequitur: In the olden days we were told that even Kings and Queens had to go to the toilet.

If twenty four hours a day for everyone is meant to be comforting, it isn’t. As capital goes there is no interest. Which in itself is no problem as long as the capital is not likely to be exhausted. And don’t fool yourselves by punishing your body going for endless runs or whatever is your poison to keep you from falling apart.

Once upon a time I had an egg timer. After some years of vague and irrational irritation every time I used it I got rid of it. Keeping an eye on all that sand (five minutes) running at the rate of knots was unnerving.

Hard boiled yours,

U

  1. You are reminding me of a day long ago when I woke up in a celebrating Germany. This was followed by a lunch in Paris and the day ended with a birthday party for a loved one in Los Angeles. The day lasted 33 hours, because I gained an extra 9 hours on the flight by changing time zones. So I really can’t understand why anyone would think of a day as lasting precisely 24 hours.

    Disputationally yours,

    • Yes, Looney, but that’s cheating. Mind you, based on your reasoning time travel might take on a whole new meaning. Still, the Reaper, waiting in the wings, keeps his own eye on the clock ticking. At best allowing you extra time. A bit like when – as children – our bedtime was extended by an hour or two in summer or on special days.

It’s great not to be rushed.

  2. Well, in theory we have 24 hours a day, but in practice we have to sleep for six hours or so, so in reality we only have around 18 hours. Then if you subtract all the time spent doing routine stuff like washing, getting dressed, eating etc, we have even less. Hmmm, not sure where this is taking me….

    • You misunderstand, as most people do, with what is a contentious subject. Looking at it cold stone sober what we do have, poor man, rich man, any man (woman or child obviously), are twenty four hours a day. Doesn’t matter how we spend them. Even if you sleep a blessed six hours a day The author (Arnold Bennett ca. 1910) asserts that … actually come to think of it … what does he assert?

This minute I have to go out to do some food shopping in order to feed the cells my poor brain keeps wearing out at the rate of knots. I will then speed read the book again and come back to you. Don’t say I don’t use what little time I have in the least economic way.
