Bail

Apropos of nothing: What’s your nightmare scenario?

I have two: One which I relive a lot of nights in my dreams. Mainly that I always have to pack up (sometimes a whole house), never enough time to do so and even if I do manage to, just about, the car/train/whatever transport will be packed and I don’t have enough hands to handle it all. On a particularly good night’s sleep the platform’s number eludes me. Or my car’s axle breaks under the weight of the kitchen sink. The last scene I made up, the rest is true.

The second and worser than worse nightmare is being imprisoned. Considering how much I fear being locked up I fear for myself. Because, in my experience, that which we fear most will eventually look over our shoulder. Please do tell me otherwise whilst not neglecting to tell me (see above) your worst nightmare scenarios – or at least one of them.

  1. When I was a child/teenager, I had despairing dreams. The worst was not seeing the person I was talking to, in spite of tearing off mask after mask as the conversation continued.

    • Joanne, hi. “Tearing off mask after mask”? That is spooky, even by my standards. I hope you managed, after a time, to see through those masks – on waking that is.

The marvel of dreams that they do give us pointers. Sometimes, like Bletchley Park, unravelling code.

  2. I have always had a dread of being financially insecure and it has most certainly come true. You probably have an abillity to keep yourself out of gaol so I wouldn’t worry too much about that one.
I have many other fears, countless ones really but they inhabit my daytime thoughts, I don’t remember dreams even though I believe we all have them.

    • Thanks for your vote of confidence, Kylie. Unfortunately, even the innocent may find themselves in “gaol”. If there is one thing I dread it’s being fenced in. Maybe that’s why I am fascinated by escape stories (escape both of the literal and the metaphorical kind). Alcatraz with nothing but a spoon to dig your way out.

You can’t remember your dreams? That’s quite unusual for a woman. Mind you, there often is only a split second on waking to hold on to a dream before it fades. Which is why I regret when being woken suddenly because that’s a sure fire way of a dream evaporating, lost for ever. Can’t say that happening to me a lot. My dreams, like a guiding shining light, tend to follow me around when upright and awake. Don’t laugh or do: If I were so inclined I could write the narrative of my life by the dreams I have had.

Anyway, dear Kylie, fear not. Stick to my mantra instead; how many times have I convinced myself, saying it to others, myself and out loud: “Everything will be fine”. I actually believe it. Everything will be fine.

  3. I am one of those lucky people who do not remember their dreams and / or nightmares. I have been to jail on three occasions and was out on bail in one case for two years plus some before the honourable court declared me not guilty. The eight hours that I spent in the lock up however was not a pleasant experience and I can assure you that it will not be for you either. So, the best course of action is to avoid landing in trouble! Before you ask me about the other two occasions, I pleaded guilty next morning at the magistrate’s court, paid the fine and went home.

    • Interesting take, Ramana, that you think yourself “lucky” not remembering dreams/nightmares. I’d be devastated if I didn’t.

You have been to jail? Only in India. Leaving the Angel aside, I wonder who’d put up bail for me. The ones who can least afford it is my guess.

Has your rain eased? Only comfort (other than sitting in the shelter of your veranda) that water is good for vegetation, not least weeds.

  4. No, it is still raining and I continue to enjoy my mornings watching it come down in my garden.

  5. I hate to fly – so I have nightmares about airplane crashes and I am mildly claustrophobic. I do not dream about being stuck in small places, fortunately. I remember most of my dreams – at least I think I do. I guess you really cannot be sure if you do not remember them all.
